90 day detention vote

Jenny Willott was of course amongst the full set of Lib Dems who voted against the government on the proposal to detain terrorist suspects for up to 90 days without charge.

So much has been bandied about in the media as to what the 'public' thinks with so few actual reliable surveys that I would urge everyone to get in touch with Ms Willott to either thank her or persuade her otherwise on jenny(at)jennywillott.com. And it wouldn't hurt to drop a comment down below either.

I think that it is fantastic that the 90 days failed but am still slightly unhappy that 28 days had to get through.

Australia / 88 deaths to al-Qaeda / Can hold suspects for 24 hours without charge.

Spain / 191 deaths to al-Qaeda / Can hold suspects for 5 days without charge.

USA / ~3,000 deaths to al-Qaeda / Can hold suspects for 7 days without charge.

UK / 52 deaths to al-Qaeda / Can hold suspects for 28 days without charge, wanted 90 days.

Seems a little strange to me.

Julie Morgan writes a bit about the issue in Surgeries, job losses and terror votes on her blog.

You can't help but feel the government deserved this one, Morgan even mentions the Charles Clarke compromise non-deal. A doubling of the days, especially when compared to other countries would seem a good result for them.
